A pulmonary function test (PFT) measures how much air your lungs hold and how fast you can blow it out.
What PFT shows
- Whether breathlessness is from asthma, COPD or another cause
- How severe the narrowing of the airways is
- Whether inhalers are working, when repeated later
The test
You blow hard into a mouthpiece connected to a computer, a few times. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes and is painless.
Treatment
Dr. Punit Patel plans inhalers, checks your inhaler technique, and gives nebulisation when an attack is on. Severe attacks are treated in the ICU with BiPAP if needed.
